Protective Padding

In 2016, I worked on Paramour, a show from Cirque du Soleil.  (I eventually took over as the wardrobe supervisor. ) During the tech process, one of the things I worked on was protective body padding for the acrobats.

This was for rib protection when the acrobat flew to a pole.  It is stretched on a garbage can, so that the stitching could be tight, yet accomodate the stretch of the spandex.

This is how the pieces looked once closed.  We did also try a pocket version.  It ultimately got scrapped.  As you can see in the next picture, the padding was too stiff and hard to wash.  I was still glad to make it, even if it didn't get thru the tech process.  Sometimes, it just happens.

My main job at that time was doing the laundry.  And there was a LOT of laundry.

Laundry Hamper

I can't even remember when I made this.  A friend had bought a laundry hamper and wanted it to be a bit more fun.  This is what it looked like

This is eventually what it became.

I made it a lid with grommets, so that "unmentionables" could be hidden.  the lid attached by the ribbons that held the bag onto the frame.

Therese Raquin

September 2015-January 2016 , I supervised "Therese Raquin" at Studio 54.  There was a pool on half the stage, which the actors were plunged into.  We had two challenges---getting the clothes dry for the second show and keeping the actors relatively warm.


To facilitate the getting the clothes clean and dry, I would start washing the chlorine our during the top of the intermission. A few pieces did need to be redyed, but for the most part, the color stayed well.

One of the other things I used was wool dryer balls.

I make mine by starting with crocheting the yarn.  Then, I crochet the crochet.  It is then tied into a knot.  The yarn is wrapped around, making it into a ball.  To finish, I use a wide eye needle and stitch thru.  The balls are then either boiled or washed in a sanitary cycle (super hot) in a panty hose to felt.

I would put the towels and bathrobes in a dryer for about 20 minutes.   The actors would come off, strip down to underwear and we would be putting the wet clothes and shoes in plastic bins and buckets, while handing off towels.   Then, we put them in bathrobes (we had multiples) and Crocs.  The dressers would head upstairs and I would start the wash.
